MINI - VID Editing in Final Cut Pro TBC

I used final cut pro to edit my Mini - Vid on Apple Mac. This software is quite familiar to me, as we used to edit various videos last year in our AS media course. However we never really had to use the editing tools and effects in it, therefore i was new to this side. The programme is quite the same as other programmes i've used before and quickly got the gist, however i used some tutorials on YouTube to find out some further information for some advanced editing, as i was not sure where to find the certain tools and effect. Below is the video tutorial i used to help me key the background of one of the shots.

Tracks To Choose From

I had 6 tracks to choose from which were all novelty tracks. I listened to all six of them and chose the one that appealed to me the most and of which i thought i could develop the best idea for a music video to pitch.

Bob McFadden & Dor - The Mummy

Robert "Bob" McFadden (January 19, 1923 ‒ January 7, 2000) was an American singer, impressionist, and voice-over actor perhaps best known for his many contributions to animated cartoons.

In 1959, he appeared as a singer with folk music artist, Rod McKuen, on the Brunswick Records album entitled Songs Our Mummy Taught Us which included the two tracks, "The Mummy" and "The Beat Generation", also released as a single.

Captain Sensible - Happy Talk

Raymond Ian Burns (born 24 April 1954),known by the stage name Captain Sensible, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist (and sometimes bassist) who grew up in Croydon, England, and co-founded the punk rock band The Damned in 1976.

He signed to A&M Records and had a UK number one hit in 1982 with a cover of "Happy Talk", the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from South Pacific, featuring backing by Dolly Mixture and a band including Robyn Hitchcock on guitar.

Neil - Hole In My Shoe

Neil's Heavy Concept Album is a 1984 recording of songs and spoken comedy routines by British actor Nigel Planer, in character as the long-suffering hippie Neil from the BBC comedy series The Young Ones.
His album followed the success of the Neil single "Hole in My Shoe" — a cover version of Traffic's 1967 hit — which reached number 2 in the United Kingdom.

A television commercial for the album had Neil in character talking about his "really beautiful" album, displaying a hole in his shoe, and hitting his head on the table he was sitting under.

Ozzy Osbourne feat dweezil Zappa - Stayin Alive

John Michael "OzzyOsbourne (born 3 December 1948) is an English heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. John Osbourne rose to prominence as lead singer of the pioneering English band Black Sabbath, whose dark and hard sound helped spawn the heavy metal genre. Due to his distinctive voice and Sabbath's style, Osbourne became known as the "Prince of Darkness".

"Stayin' Alive" is a disco song by the group Bee Gees from the Saturday Night Fevermotion picture soundtrack. The song was written by the Bee Gees and produced by the Bee Gees. It was released on 13 December 1977. Ozzy Osbourne then covered the song and it appeared on CD 3 of his 2005 box set, Prince of Darkness. The song is 4:39 long and was never previously released before the box set.

Ozzy Osbourne Feat Miss Piggy - Born To Be Wild

John Michael "OzzyOsbourne (born 3 December 1948) is an English heavy metal vocalist and songwriter. John Osbourne rose to prominence as lead singer of the pioneering English band Black Sabbath, whose dark and hard sound helped spawn the heavy metal genre. Due to his distinctive voice and Sabbath's style, Osbourne became known as the "Prince of Darkness".

"Born to Be Wild" is a song performed by Ozzy Osbourne, with commentary by Miss Piggy. The number begins with Miss Piggy flattered that Ozzy is going to sing to her, and ends with her advising him "Ozzy, get off of the floor!".

The Fools - Psycho Chicken
The Fools are a Massachusetts rock band best known for the party atmosphere of their live performances and tongue-in-cheek original songs, covers and parodies.

In 1979, the band released "Psycho Chicken", a parody of The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer", and it was an immediate hit on Boston radio stations.

MiniVid - First Shoot

After choosing my pitch we then designed a story board and prepared the idea. After that we then did the shoot. In this shoot we decided to do all the group shots needed. We chose to do this then as it was a time in school that was very convenient to get lots of people involved and able to participate.

We used the main entrance at school to film it as there is a wide corridor where lots of people can walk. Also there are doors which open automatically, and this fits in well with our story line as it emphasises the main character as it seems to open for him, enhancing the big ego traits he is meant to have.

We asked groups of friends to be in our Mini-Vid and quite a lot of people were willing to participate. However, as the shoot started to go on longer than expected people got impatient about taking part.

The shoot taking longer seemed to be due to people walking through shots as we were stood in the main entrance. This is obviously something to be expected, but we should've taken it into consideration.

Another location we used was the stairs at the end of the corridor. Here we got Jake to slide down the corridor instead of waiting for people to move on the stairs. This worked effectively and linked well into the next location of him walking down the next corridor.

In our first shoot we used props such as scrunched up paper balls and a football. Both of these were thrown at Jake to attempt to distract him. I think the football worked very effectively as we then cut to a shot of him casually knocking it away with his head which looked effortless and added to the personality he was giving off.

Mini-Vid Group Concept

After our pitches of the mini-vid ideas we then got into groups and decided which idea we would like to work on best.

I was in a group with James Jake Dec Poppy and Millie. We decided to choose my pitch which I was pleased with as it would be fun to film and edit.

The idea is roughly the same still, that a character is walking through the corridors at school and completely ignoring the distractions and things happening around him and not caring about anything. However slight adjustments for example people don't follow him any more. and also we have added different lip syncing scenes which we are going to add in of the main character singing.

We also got inspiration for the video from the music video Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve. This follows a similar concept of someone walking down a street and ignoring all the complications going on around him. Below is the video.

For our video we plan to start in the main entrance of school as we can use the automatic doors and we think it would look effective starting there.

We also plan to use that first corridor and the staircase at the end of it. For our MiniVid we need one main person to play the main character, which Jake has offered to be, and then a group of people to be in the corridor causing distractions. We think it will be easy to find people to take part around school as it wont be long and tedious to film and should be quite fun.

My Track Choice: Artist/Track Title

Ozzy Osbourne  (Stayin' Alive)

Reason For Choosing The Track

I chose this song as it was the most appealing to me out of the tracks i had to choose from. Also I am familiar with the original so it would have been easy to lip sync to when creating the Mini Vid. Also the song has a catchy vibe to it and I thought with this people would go for the song and my pitch. With this song I could then develop an idea.

The Mini-Vid Task Explained

The first task we are carrying out for A2 is the mini-vid task of which is similar to our preliim we did on our AS coursework. It is designed to start making us think about music video production of by creating a 30sec - 60sec clip. However, it involves considerably more research and planning than our prelim did, as for our prelim we were aware of the shots we had to use.

With this task unlike the prelim we have to pitch an idea to our class mates with a 30-60 seconds pitch to try put forward an idea for the class to choose yours.

The aims are:

  • To advance our understanding of the factors behind track selection
  • To provide practise pitching
  • To provide a sense of scale: A music video production is more demanding than a film opening
  • To provide opportunities for editing experimentation and creative expression
  • To deepen our familiarity with FCProX tools and FX
  • Generating significant evidence on A2 coursework criteria

My Pitch (Mini-Vid)

Ozzy Osbourne - Stayin' Alive

The Video Starts off with fingers walking then zooms out onto the guy walking with swag, also with shades on, either in a suit to show he's smart, formal and has "swag". As soon as he walks past someone they start following him. He's constantly looking cool and walking what ever occurs in front of him.

For example someone skates in front of him merely missing him and he just keeps on walking. Another example is someone walking in front of him (girl) and drops her file and her notes go everywhere. Something else is that two boys are having a fight grappling each other and they pass in front of him scrapping however he just walks straight on by.

More things like, paper planes, paper balls, girl and boy kissing etc. However what happens, he's "stayin alive"...

Below is my pitch I used however contains no voice over as I explained to the class myself whilst the video was playing in the background.
