Twitter Page (TeamGob)

This is our own team twitter page which we have set up to gain world wide feedback from a range of different sources from all over the world and from those who know a lot about the music video business and therefore can only benefit us when gaining such feedback. We feel that having a twitter account will also make our knowledge of the genre and the track much better by getting specific feedback from people and followers who like the type of music and the track we are doing our coursework on.

Learning A New Editing Effect (1)

Here i am trying to learn how to turn a still 2D image into a 3D tracking/panning shot as if we filmed the video.

This is really useful as you can use any image and turn it into a video with a realistic feel of being there.

After watching the tutorial i have learnt that i need to use virtual cameras within the composition. By creating a Grid and camera tracking you can create this realistic effect.

By using curves, null objects and artificial lights we can turn any 3D image into a video. the only down side to this is that it will take around 20 minutes to make a 5-10 sec clip.

I have already used After Effects behind and used 3D cameras and objects within the composition so i will find this roughly straight forward.

We are thinking of implementing this with the old man inputted onto the image dancing, by filming him separate on a green screen.

Shoot 1

Our first attempt to shoot the music video was in leeds on 25th Oct of which Me, Ben, Curtis, Harry and Patrick all attended to help shoot. However after getting into leeds and onto Briggate, we set up the cameras and left Paddy to o get changed. Unfortunately whilst Patrick was getting ready he ripped the masked slightly as it would not fit onto his head. This then ruined the day of the shoot as we had no one to be the Old Man Character. Here is an image of Ben preparing to film the shoot.

Music Video Idea 2

20103 Movie of Bad Grandpa
Our music video idea is starting at a care home where an old man wakes up and begins his day and sets off out of the care home with his hopping basket ad goes out into the world without a care on his mind he just wants to do his shopping where by along the way in various different locations such as city centres and train stations and shops he encounters a few mistakes and mis haps during his adventure where later on in the music video he finds himself in a night club in the middle of town at night where everyone around him is giving him dirty looks and not really taking a liking to him then after that a time lapse happens where the old man is back at the care home at in the chair he woke up in at the start of the video which makes the viewers think that it was all a dream however a clue from the so called dream will be left on te chair as the old man gets up to start his eventful day.

Disclosure - F For You (Music Video Analysis)

ACTDisclosure
TRACKF For You
Year: 2013
Director:
Genre: House
Main Audience: 15-21

Introduction

  • The genre of this music video is techno/dance/pop.
  • Compared to all their other videos it is very simple with no storyline.
What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

  • There are no actual links between the lyrics and the visuals as it is just them performing.
What is the relationship between music and visuals?

  • You can see quite clearly the relationship between the music and the visuals.
  • When the music gets more complex, the backdrop starts to have more going on on it.
  • Also when they are doing the DJ instrumental parts of the song, the camera focuses on the instrumental and DJ set up.
  • They also do this with the singing.
Are there close ups of the artist and star image motifs?
  • There are plenty of close ups of the boys while they are playing and singing.
  • Mostly close ups of the one singing and not so many on the one who DJ's the most.
  • Dark lighting and quick camera shots make it hard to see the artists properly when there are close ups of them.
  • Their famous drawn white 'face' comes up a lot on the backdrop so you know it is them immediately.
Is there reference to the notion of looking?
  • There isn't really any reference to the notion of looking.
  • No girls in the music video.
Is the music video performance based, narrative based or concept based?
  • This music video is purely performance based.
  • No narrative told throughout.
  • Its quite a repetitive song so the pure performance fits with the style of song.
Conclusion

  • Overall, this video is purely performance based which is good because it fits with the song and wouldn't really look right if it had a story to it.
  • I really like the simpleness of it and how there is not much to it.

Disclosure - White Noise ft. AlunaGeorge

ACTDisclosure
TRACKWhite Noise
Year: 2013
Director:
Genre: House
Main Audience: 15-21

Main Points

  • The genre of this music video is electronic, deep house.
  • Dull colours used throughout.
  • Dance song, dancing used in the video.
  • The only relationship i can see between the lyrics and the visuals is that the lyrics 'You got me washed out, washed out, colour drained' links to the colour of the whole video because it is very dull and there are no bright colours.
  • Other than that there is no connection between the lyrics and the visuals.
  • The music and the visuals have a very strong link.
  • When the first beat drops the man suddenly starts to dance in time with the music.
  • When the music slows down again the guy gets on with his everyday life again, it's almost as if when the music drops he drops his life for a few minutes and dances.
  • There are no close ups or any shots for that matter of the artists.
  • There are only actors in the music video.
  • The sign for Disclosure (the face drawn with white lines) comes up at one point in the music video which shows it is their song and them who made it.
  • There isn't really any reference to the notion of looking apart from the girl.
  • She is shown close up towards the end and this shows some voyeurism.
  • There is a little bit of the Male Gaze theory involved but not much at all.

Conclusion

The mise en scene element of the video plays a big part in how the audience judge the style of the video. Throughout the music video dark colours are used, this relates with the underground location used within the video itself. The gritty dark style of the music video which is created through a

colour filter is used to emphasize
the lighting taking place throughout. This emphasizes the shadows in the music video, which when the security guard dances helps to give a greater effect of his movements. Slow motion of the dancing is used to add effect of the beat and works really well. The locations that are used throughout the music video help convey the genre of the music itself, which is urban/electronic dance. The emptiness of the location in the video is filled up with the beats of the music.

Within the music video cinematography is used, it is used to enhance the audience’s interpretation of the music video and also their experience. Throughout the video the audience is following the main character as he goes about his normal daily routine, the audience follows him as a third person audience, this is because the camera has a certain hand held motion about it and transits throughout the music video is a smooth and realistic way, which makes the audience seem like they are part of the journey, which is very key in getting an audience to enjoy a music video of the narrative. Other techniques such as zooming, panning and the faced paced cutting are also used when focusing on the main character (the security guard).

Music Video:

 Star Performer
In this music video the whole thing is situated around the two artists of the music video and this makes the video more appealing where by you get to see a small insight into the making and creation of this music video also you get to see into the life a little bit of the artists and the amount of fun which goes with it.
Audience
Also the audience in this video plays a huge part where by it gives the music video a better out look when people see that there are masses and masses of fans enjoying themselfs at one of their concerts to as well as this video having some concept to it it also has some performance with it aswell.

Performance
This video has both concept and performance related structures where by you get to see the making of it and the behind the scenes look and you also get to see some of the gigs or performances that have been done by the artists when performing this song live to an audience

Mise En Scene
In this music video it is all about mise en scene as they have a green screen for part of it and it is only the green screen at one point which enhances the verisimilitude of the music video and fro example this shot shows the fun they have with the fire crackers also being part of the mise en scene

Pursuit of Happiness- Kid Kudi (Music Video Analysed)

ACT: Kid Cudi
TRACK: Pursuit of Happiness
Year: 2010
Director: Brody Baker
Genre: House
Main Audience: 15-21

Star Performer
In this music video the star performer is Kid Cudi and he is usually the main figure on the screen throughout the music video this is important due to it being appealing to the audience, Also when he is on screen he looks directly at the camrea, this is to achive verisimilitude and a sense of realism when watching the music video it also shows his power and role within the music video.

Mise En Scene
The mise en scene in the music video plays a key part when looking at what is happening and denoting whats going on in and around the main shots for example this shot of the champagne bottle signifies a celebration or a party type event which is common with this genre and with this style of music.

Editing
Teh editing in this video has a huge effect on how the audience views the music video where by it is totally slowed down when the main singer is on screen and is singing it gives it an effect where by you see him as being powerful and a lot more important than the rest of the characters and people on the screen as he is centre framed too aldo the editing when the lights are flashed and dimmed which is sown in this screen shot here it gives it a more glamarous effect.

Lip Syncing
In this music video there is alot of lip syncing and this proves vital when achiving a sense of realism, it also makes the music video look better in my opinion due to it not just all being a narrative aproach when shooting the music video. For example this screen shot shows the singers in a close up which adds effect to show their status in the video.

Shot Framing
Shot framing is key when shooting a music video and in this video the shot framing works well and this if shown her in this picure and it shows the main and key elements of the video here by this shot glass being centre frame it works well and it draws the viewers attention to it so that it makes it more iconic for the video.
